Volkswagen just revealed the all-new 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, and this is much more than a light refresh. The second-generation Atlas Cross Sport gets completely new sheet metal, dramatically updated lighting, a redesigned cabin and new technology, while keeping the five-passenger layout that has distinguished it from the three-row Atlas since its introduction. From our perspective at King Volkswagen, the most interesting part is how much attention Volkswagen has put into making the Atlas Cross Sport feel more premium without turning it into an entirely different kind of SUV. The redesigned model is expected to launch in early 2027. The New Atlas Cross Sport Finally Leans All the Way Into Its Sportier Role The Atlas Cross Sport has always occupied an interesting spot in Volkswagen's SUV lineup. It shares plenty with the Atlas, but trades the seven-passenger layout for five seats and a more dramatically sloped rear profile. For 2027, Volkswagen has pushed that distinction considerably further. The new Cross Sport has a lower, more planted appearance, with a short rear overhang, dramatically raked rear pillars and stronger body proportions. Up front, there are stacked LED headlights and an available illuminated VW badge framed by double lightlines. Around back, the taillight design echoes the lighting signature at the front. Even details like the tailgate have been cleaned up so it now sits flush with the rear bumper. This feels less like Volkswagen trying to make an Atlas slightly sportier and more like the Cross Sport developing a stronger identity of its own. The 2027 Atlas Cross Sport Cabin Might Be the Bigger Transformation The exterior will probably get most of the attention in photos, but Volkswagen has essentially started over inside, too. There's a new architectural design running across the dashboard, more soft-touch materials and standard gray wood trim. Available ambient lighting can extend through the dashboard and doors, while the interior color choices include Pebble Grey, black and a medium brown. More importantly, Volkswagen has focused on things you'll actually interact with. Front seating has been redesigned, with available full-back massage functions for both the driver and front passenger on upper trims. A hands-free power liftgate is now standard, along with rear sunshades, and the center console has space to wirelessly charge two phones side by side. Those changes make the redesign more interesting to us than simply installing larger displays and calling the cabin new. Volkswagen Is Making the Technology Easier to Live With, Too There is plenty of new technology in the 2027 Atlas Cross Sport, but some of the smaller ideas may end up being the most useful. A new Driver Experience Dial gives you a physical central control for functions including audio volume, drive modes and Volkswagen's Atmospheres feature. Volkswagen is also expanding its connected features through myVW+, with available services covering navigation, entertainment, connectivity and even generative-AI-powered voice functionality. Driver assistance technology is evolving as well. Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE suite returns with updates to Travel Assist, including the ability for the driver to initiate a lane change while using the hands-on semi-automated driving feature. There is also a new Emergency Assist Plus function designed to help guide the vehicle toward the side of the road if the system detects a medical emergency.
