Five Things Everyone Should Know Before Test Driving A New Car | Gaithersburg, MD

Is it time to slip behind the wheel of a new Volkswagen? This is a very exciting time and we couldn’t be happier to help you dive into your search, but before you do that it might be helpful to take a peek at some of our tips below. Below we have a couple of helpful tips you should keep in your back pocket if you’ll be searching for a new vehicle anytime soon! Before you schedule a test drive with a potential vehicle there is a lot you should think about. However, if you’re thinking “wait, what should I be considering?” Don’t stress it, we’ve got all you need below! Bring proof of insurance and your license: This might seem obvious but you generally need proof of license and insurance before you’re allowed to take the vehicle out on the road. Making sure you have this information makes the process run smoother. Don’t be afraid to ask the dealer for their documentation of ownership and the vehicle papers. Ask for the records: If you’re considering a used vehicle, it’s important to know everything about the vehicle’s past life. That includes things as small as maintenance reports to bigger things like accident reports, and everything in between. The more you know, the less you’ll be surprised if something isn’t working properly. Test Everything: Regardless if you buy used or new, there is always a possibility of features not working properly. A test drive is not just about driving the vehicle is about learning the features, deciding if it’s comfortable, making sure everything is working. Assure yourself that the vehicle is worth the investment. If you find issues, be sure to pint them out and even ask about a price reduction. Test drive multiple vehicles: It’s not a bad idea to test drive more than one vehicle, it is a way for you to compare similar vehicles and see what other vehicles offer that yours might not. It also allows you to have options if your dream ride wasn’t what you expected. So, if you think you’re ready to slip behind the wheel of a brand new Volkswagen, browse our available inventory and schedule a test drive with us for whenever works best for you! Our sales team is eager to help you find the right ride for you and answer any and all questions you might have!

Keep Work Zones Safe This Summer With These Tips | Gaithersburg, MD

Now that the sun is shining again and summer is right around the corner, the chances that you’ll be hitting the road are a lot higher. And regardless if you’re traveling near or far, the chances that you end up seeing one of those orange signs that let you know road work is up ahead are pretty high. I know, it can be frustrating because it slows down your travels, but summer is the best time for construction so you’re going to run into it. With that being said, this week we have some safety tips for driving through a work zone. If you’re thinking you might not need them, just think about how many accidents can happen if you’re going too fast through a work zone. With people working right next to your vehicle and other machinery at work, anything could cause you to have to come to a stop or swerve out of the way. If you're going too fast, injury or worse could happen to the workers or you. So check out our tips below and see how important it is to slow down this summer! Increase your following distance: You should have three car lengths in front of you when entering a construction zone. I know you might think this is extensive but give yourself more room and leave space in case of an accident like a worker stepping out too far or even something falling in the road! Don’t assume workers are present: A lot of the time you’ll see signs that tell you to reduce your speed because you are approaching a work zone, but once you get there it looks like nobody is working…so most people accelerate to normal speed. Regardless if you don’t see the worker or not, obey the speed limit. Workers could be working farther up, and even if they’re not working a cop could still be monitoring the area just waiting for someone to break the law! Follow instructions from flaggers: Always obey instructions from flaggers, and assume that their instructions overrule any other traffic signs or signals. Their directions might not align with normal traffic patterns, so be prepared. Also, be on the lookout for flaggers' signals, such as an extended palm indicating that you need to stop. Be sure to also reduce your speed and be especially aware of your surroundings when driving near a work zone with flaggers posted. Minimize your distractions: Distraction-free driving is always important, but especially during work zones! When you are approaching a work zone, slow down, turn down any loud music, and stay focused on your surroundings. The more attentive you are the less likely you will be to have an accident! Merge promptly at land closure: One of the most common causes of accidents and road rage in construction zones is that of lane closures. When you see a sign posted for an upcoming lane closure, be sure to merge as soon as safely possible. Do not wait until the lane is coming to an end to force your way over into the next lane over. This is not only rude to the other drivers who followed the posted signs and merged but it could cause a road rage incident.

King Volkswagen’s Guide To Checking Your Car’s Fluid Levels! | Gaithersburg, MD

Spring is right around the corner and it’s never too early to get started on your spring cleaning  checklists! One of the most overlooked tasks by a car owner is remembering to top off your fluid levels! Your vehicle’s fluids all have a level that they should remain at and when they fall below that level, a whole myriad of issues can occur. If you don’t even know what fluid levels you should be checking, then this week’s blog is perfect for you! Below you will see that we have listed out all of the fluid levels you should be keeping an eye on! Topping off your fluid levels is a fairly easy task, and should only take you a few minutes to complete. However, if you're not a DIY person, just schedule a service appointment at King Volkswagen and let our team get your ride back in tip-top shape! King Volkswagen’s Car Fluid Level Guide: Engine Oil: Your engine needs oil in order to keep moving parts lubricated and working properly. To check your oil, make sure your engine is cool before popping open the hood. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it on a clean rag, reinsert the stick all the way back into the tank. Pull out the stick and see where the oil line hits, there will be a notch that indicates what a safe oil level is. If your oil hits below the notch, check for the specific type of oil and add some yourself. Transmission Fluid: Transmission fluid is important because it keeps your transmission lubricated and will save you from expensive repairs. The second dipstick in your engine is for this fluid. Like we did to check the engine’s oil, you will have to remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and reinsert it back into the tank. Pull it back out and examine where the fluid hits on the stick, it’s also a good idea to check the quality of your fluids. Wipe a small amount onto your fingers, if the fluid has a pink or clear look to it, it is fine. If the fluid smells burnt or has particles in it, it is time to swap it out. Brake Fluid: From a safety standpoint, this is one of the most important fluids. Brake fluid basically keeps you from running into other cars and objects. You’ll find the brake fluid reservoir toward the back under your hood, be sure to clean off the outside of the compartment so any dirt or dust doesn’t enter the reservoir. Open up the cap and look inside to see where the fluid level is. It should be about a half-inch from the cap. If it is lower than that, check your owner’s manual for what fluid you should use. Also, if the fluid has a dark tint to it, bring your vehicle into our service department for a change of fluids. Power Steering Fluid: It’s important to have control over your car and this fluid keeps the right parts lubricated to ensure a safe driving experience. This reservoir is typically found under the hood, on the passenger side with a cap that will likely say “steering” on it. Many cars have a light colored reservoir so you can see the level of fluid without removing the cap. If your car has a dark reservoir, clean off the cap before opening to avoid dirt particles from entering the system. Open up the cap and use the dipstick the same way as we did before, if the fluid is low, you can easily add more. Also, if your fluid level is low check for a leak in the system. Windshield Washer Fluid: One important part of driving is being able to see out the windshield, this fluid is key to ensure that happens. Most vehicles have a clear washer fluid tank that will be labeled either “washer” or “windshield.” If you need to add more, simply pop the cap off and pour into the tank. Do not use soap and water if you are completely empty!! But, the window cleaner that you use at home can work until you fill up with the real stuff.
