Summer is officially here, at least that is what the calendar says so it must be true - yippee! That means nights hanging by the pool, Summer BBQ’s, and late night bonfires with your friends. But when it comes to packing up the VW for a friends BBQ there are a few ways to stay organized and make your life easier. This week, we have your guide to packing the ultimate Summer BBQ necessities! Take a look below. Freeze water bottles in place of ice in your cooler. Frozen bottles will keep your items cooler for a longer period of time, plus when they thaw you will have bottled water to drink! Double-whammy! Pack a small first-aid kit. It is always a good idea to be prepared and creating your own first-aid kit from home items can help during those tight situations, especially if you have children. Pack the cooler smartly and efficiently. Start with a clean, cold cooler Use a water-tight reusable container to store food items, keep any bagged items on the top of the ice/ frozen water bottle layers Cans and bottles should layer the bottom of the cooler where they’ll stay cold longer, if you choose the ice method, add a layer of ice on top of drinks and food containers. Ice will make its way through the crevices and keep your items cool Be sure to pack the cooler full so no warm air can sneak in Pack a plastic tub to haul back any cans or dirty dishes you may have brought to the BBQ Bring your favorite goodies to eat/ grill - it is a GREAT idea to always pack your favorite Summer foods which will also add to the amount of food and variety offered at the BBQ. When it comes to the car buying process one this is for sure - it can take forever. As the paperwork piles up, it is important to bring a few items with you to ensure that the process goes smoothly and as quickly as possible. This week’s blog is a guide for what to bring when you are almost ready to cross that finish line! Take a look below at the things that you should bring to make it a hassle-free process for everyone involved. Your driver’s license: Your I.D. is proof that you are a legally registered driver, this is important since you have to drive off the lot. Your driver’s license is a way to identify that the check or other forms of payment are actually yours, too. Your payment form: Whether it is a bank, credit union, or personal check, pre-approved loan, or any other payment form - be sure to bring it. If you are planning to put money towards a down payment you will need some way to pay for it. Proof of insurance: In order to drive your new vehicle off the lot, you will need proof of insurance. It’s a good idea to call your insurance company ahead of time and add the new vehicle to your existing policy. You’ll need the car’s VIN number to set this up. You can also call from the dealership and have them fax or email the insurance card to the dealership. Title/ Registration for your trade-in: If you are trading in a vehicle, be sure to bring the title. If you have a co-signer or a lien against the car, get the appropriate signature ahead of time. This part can be tricky and sometimes causes a hold-up. Give the dealership a call if you are unsure how to go about this. Also, you will need a copy of your current registration. Loan account number: If you are trading in a vehicle and still owe on your loan, bring the loan account number. This number is on one of your payment stubs. You can also call the lender beforehand and ask how to facilitate the transaction. It is also a good idea to clean out your vehicle beforehand. Even if you and I are totally different in literally every way, we might still have one similarity: topping off the gas tank when it’s time to fill up. A lot of people do it! It’s okay to admit it! I just like seeing that round dollar amount on the pump. But I found out recently that it’s actually pretty bad for your engine to do this. Here’s why. First of all, you can totally burn out your engine in so many ways. The most important is that you can overwhelm your vehicle’s evaporative system. We all learned in science class once upon a time that heat makes pressure, and when your gasoline heats up from your driving, it expands from the heat and creates that pressure. So, when you overfill your tank, there’s nowhere for that pressure to go and it ends up in your evaporative system. This is not its intended purpose, so if you do this a lot then you can totally kill that system. The other thing is that you’re honestly just wasting money. Pumps these days can sense if there’s excess gas, i.e. if it starts backing up into the filler pipe, and it just takes that gas and sends it right back into the station’s tank. So, the dollars and cents will start adding up but you won’t actually be getting the gas you pay for. Basically, don’t top off. That’s just a bad habit. Fuel economy is a great buzzword these days - we’re all looking to get the most bang for our buck when it comes to filling up our tanks, but sometimes it can seem like we’re filling up more often than we’d like. That’s where this blog comes in! We’ve got some great proven tips for improving your fuel economy easily and getting a few more miles to the gallon as you drive around town! The first and most important tip is to not speed. A great way to combat any lead-footed tendencies is to use cruise control on the highway when it’s safe to do so. This gets rid of the acceleration and deceleration that come with speeding, and also keeps you safe from getting pulled over (speeding is, after all, illegal). Lower speeds = higher MPG’s! Maintaining your vehicle is instrumental in getting good gas mileage. With properly inflated tires, correct alignment, and regular oil changes, your vehicle will perform beautifully and efficiently! Low tires create drag, which makes your vehicle work harder to perform the way it should. Next time you need to get new tires, you should ask for low rolling resistance tires to help your vehicle that much more. Winter tires are a great idea for areas where there’s snow accumulation, because your engine won’t have to work so hard to overcome snow and ice. When going out and running errands or traveling, try carpooling and combining all your trips into one journey. This will save gas, cut down emissions, and save money for everyone! If you need to stop, turn your car off completely. Idling for one minute uses just about as much gas as starting your car does, and it creates exhaust gases that are harmful to the environment. (And when you carpool, you can use the HOV lane!) When summer comes, park in the shade and use your garage if you have it. When your vehicle is out in the sun, it damages your paint and clearcoat, and it causes your gas to evaporate inside your tank, leaving you with less to drive with. Finally, clean out your car! If you have a lot of junk in the trunk, so to speak, clean it out so that you can carry what you need in your vehicle. If you have roof mounted storage, try and fit those items into your vehicle - or switch to a rear-mounted storage solution. This will reduce the drag of your vehicle overall and save you gas! We can’t guarantee a massive improvement in your MPG’s - these tips won’t get you from 20 to 70 MPG but it will help get a couple more miles out of each gallon if you work hard. Try them out! Have you ever smelled something in your car that might have been a little…. Out of the ordinary? I know I have. Usually, my car smells really nice and fresh because I have a great little car jar thing that smells like lavender and lemons. It’s great! But then one day I got into my car and started driving and it started smelling decidedly like maple syrup, which I do NOT have as a car jar flavor! So I, being nervous and paranoid about everything to do with my car, took it into the shop. And thank goodness I did! It turned out that coolant had been leaking out of my car, which could have made my engine overheat! So, I got that fixed right away and now my car is back to the nice lavender and lemon scent, and I know what it means if my car smells weird. So, let me take a minute to share those smells with you, just in case you’re experiencing the same thing! If your car smells like rotten eggs, it’s not that you’re driving near some trash - unless you are, of course! If it’s a persistent smell, you shouldn’t ignore it. This means your engine probably isn’t running very well and you could have issues with your catalytic converter. The “cat,” as it’s called, can be a really expensive repair, so you need to get this looked at ASAP! Burning carpet smell is also an important one to keep a nose out for. If you experience this smell, it could be that your brakes need to be checked. Especially if you’re driving in normal conditions - as opposed to in winter or rain or something. Your brakes are one of the most important parts of your car, so take good care of them! Like I said earlier, maple syrup smell can mean that you have a coolant leak - this can lead to your engine overheating! If you want to check on your coolant yourself, wait until your radiator is cooled down to remove the radiator cap and check the fluid level in there. Burned rubber smell can mean slipping drive belts or loose hoses rubbing against other things in your engine. You should get this checked out quickly because you don’t want to throw or break a belt while you’re on the highway! Hot oil smell may mean oil is leaking onto your exhaust system. Look for oil on the pavement underneath your car when you’re stopped, or for smoke coming out of your engine area. Similarly, gasoline smell can mean a leak in your fuel injector line or gas tank. Check under your car for leaking gasoline as well, and then hoof it on over to the shop to get that fixed! If your car smells like dirty socks, even when it’s neat and clean as a pin, it’s probably mildew in the moisture condensing in your A/C evaporator. To fix this, just drive a mile from home and turn off the A/C and run the fan on high to dry your system out. Voilà! I hope these sniff-tips have helped you out! We’ve been there, stop stressing. You go mentally insane, feel like your heart is about to pop right out of your chest, right? You break out in a sweat, oh don’t forget the shakes, the shakes are the crazy part. Losing your keys is such a pain in the rear. It happens! I actually lost mine yesterday, and boy I was not happy. I asked around to see if anyone else has this constant issue- yes, they do! You’re no lone wolf on this subject. I asked if there were any hacks that they might have in order to try to keep your keys where you will see them. Here is what I got! Buy a key hanger for by the door- this will help you when you walk in at night to just place your keys on the wall directly where you need to pass by to go in and out of your home Get a keychain to pop your keys on- this will be easier to spot no matter where you place them Get a front door organizer- like the key hanger, the organizer will make it harder to just throw your stuff on the floor when you walk in the house! Get a magnetic pocket keychain- this keychain attached to a belt buckle and extends when needed to use the actual key. Color Code Keys- Although this might not prevent you from misplacing them, color coding your keys will make it easier to keep your keys in order and know which key is used for what.
