Tips For Your Teen Driver! | Gaithersburg, MD
If you’re a parent you know how fast time moves, but can you believe that your little one is already old enough to take a seat behind the wheel of your Volkswagen? Whether this is your first teen driver or you’ve been through it before, it never gets easier. So this week we are here to lend you some helpful tips on how to help your teen conquer the road and help give you some peace of mind knowing they’ll be behind the wheel alone. So take a peek below and stop into King today to find the right Volkswagen for your new driver!
Demonstrate good driving behavior early:
Kids pick up on a lot and whether you notice or not, they started copying you when they were babies. So it’s no surprise they mimic your behavior behind the wheel. Be more conscious when you’re driving, keep both hands on the wheel, try not to fidget with the radio too much and definitely don’t use your phone AT ALL!! Think of yourself as a road role model and act exactly as you would want them to behind the wheel.
It’s okay to let a pro teach them:
Let’s face it some of us just can’t do it and that doesn’t make you a bad parent, if anything thing, realizing you don’t have the patience to teach your child the proper way to drive but giving them an opportunity where they can learn, makes you an awesome parent! And taking part in Driver’s Ed could actually save you some money on auto insurance! SCORE!
Set realistic boundaries:
It might seem like it sometimes but kids actually crave boundaries and rules. I know you’re thinking I’m crazy right? Well wrong. Kids don’t know the right and wrong thing to do in certain situations, that’s why it is important you set rules for them so they know. So it’s important to set rules and boundaries for the new driver, whether it be no more than two friends in the car, or not going more than 20 miles at least for the first couple of months. Be realistic, but lay the rules down early on. This could help avoid a fight later down the road, which ends with them saying “Well you never said that wasn’t okay!” And they wouldn’t be wrong because you didn’t’!
Talk to them about the risks of driving… not just drinking and driving:
You’ve probably been talking to your kids about the risk of drinking and driving since forever because that’s what you were taught. Yes, that is very important to talk about but don’t forget about the risk of distracted driving. Today’s kids are consumed with technology now we’re in a world of Smartphones, tablets, Smartwatches, satellite radio, and who knows what else technology is on the horizon! That means countless new distractions for drivers, young and old. So let them know exactly how dangerous it can be to drive distracted, not just drunk.
Share driving responsibilities
Every new drive needs practice, so give it to them! Split the driving responsibility, whether that means running to the grocery store, Picking up their little brother from practice, or even going to a friends house. It might be a little at first but the only way they will get better is by practicing. Plus it takes some responsibility off your plate which is always a good thing!
Being a parent to a new driver can be a rough time, but I promise you will get through it! It can be an exciting, sad, and scary time, but remember you watched them grow up and conquer everything else that was thrown at them, they can do this and so can you!
Summer is in full swing and now that you’re tan, looking fab, and getting ready to hit the road to your next adventure, nothing can stop your shine…except maybe a rainstorm. It’s no secret that we can get some pretty crazy rain storms during the summer, and even though they tend to be quick, they can sometimes be intense. If you find yourself stuck on the road during one of them, don’t stress, if anything just pull-over until it clears up. But if you plan to venture through the storm be sure that your wipers are up for the challenge.
Most of know how important wiper blades are, but rarely maintenance them! Why you might ask? Good question, I don’t know! I can only assume it is because when our wiper blades need replacement a little orange light doesn’t show up on our dashboard and because we don’t have to use them every day we tend to pay less attention to them. So this week we are giving you the 411 on everything you need to know about your wipers, including what to look for to see if they need replacement and tips for maintaining the life of them! Don’t wait any longer, get those wipers ready to take on anything and wipe away the stress the next time you’re stuck in a rainstorm!
When inspecting your wipers, look for the following:
- Broken frame – Detachment of frame arm or connection point
- Metal Corrosion
- Visible cracks, tears, or missing pieces
- Check squeegee wiper to see if it is still flexible
- Check that squeegee is secure in the wiper frame.
Maintenance Tips:
Being able to see out of your window is essential to safe driving. Most drivers use wipers to clear away rain, sleet, and snow, yet most drivers wait too long and end up driving with bad wipers. Remembering to maintenance your wipers every six months or when you notice the action above happening.
Why your blades deteriorate:
- Sun: Ultraviolet light and ozone deterioration
- Oil: Car waxes and exhaust hold rubber-deteriorating oil
- Airborne debris: Sand, mud, and dust carried in the wind
- Moisture: Acid rain and salt water (in moist air both near the shore and inland)
Extend the life of your wipers by doing the following:
- Clean your windshield every time you fill your tank
- Gently wipe the rubber squeegee with a damp paper towel to remove any loose dirt or oil.
- Never use your windshield wipers to de-ice your windshield
- Pull your wiper blades away from your windshield during winter months to prevent ice on your wipers!

Get Organized For Summer! | Gaithersburg, MD
Summer is here and that means your summer road trip is just around the corner! But if you’re like many of us, your vehicle is in no shape to be hitting the road, mostly because of the mess inside. Where are your passengers going to sit? How will you pack anything inside? Well lucky for you we have some helpful tips for getting your vehicle cleaned up and organized just in time for you to hit the road for some fun. Keeping your ride clean and organized doesn’t only look good but it makes your ride safer without things rolling around on the ground and creating a distraction. So where should you start? Easy! Check out all of our tips below, pull everything out, separate them into a keep and toss piles, and start your organizing! If you need a tune-up before you hit the road be sure to schedule a service appointment with us today and check out our service specials to ensure you save big!
Step 1: Sort and clean
- Take everything out of the car, including car seats, music, and miscellaneous items stored in the glovebox and door pockets.
- Don’t forget the trunk and cargo area!
- Organize the rest of the items into three piles: stuff you use all the time, things you use occasionally and items you might need in an emergency. Whatever doesn’t fall into these categories should be stored in your home or garage.
Step 2: Analyze
- Ask yourself, “How do I use my car?”
- Are you the taxi driver? Maybe you’re a parent with two toddlers in car seats or salesman who travels with a trunk load of samples. Whatever it is, figure it out.
Step 3: Prioritize
- Depending upon your needs, go through your three piles and prioritize the most important items in each group
- And just like seasonal clothes in a closet, many items such as ice scrapers and emergency kits should be stored back into your vehicle
Step 4: Contain your needs
- Loose objects in the car lead to disorganization and mess. In the event of a sudden stop or a crash, they can also damage your car or, worse, injure your occupants. Get yourself a good organizer to keep all of your items concise and easy to access.

Summer Car Care Tips For Your VW | Gaithersburg, MD
Summer is finally here and we know you can’t wait to hit the road for some summer fun! But before you do that it is best to get your ride in tip-top shape to avoid any breakdowns, overheating, or any other repair that might cost you more than you were hoping. The best way to avoid any of the above is to regularly service your Volkswagen and give it some well deserved TLC! That’s why this week we have summer car care tips for you to help make sure you’ve checked off all the boxes! So if you’re a car owner that likes to roll up their sleeves and get a little dirty, you’ll like to hear that the below maintenances are all DIY friendly! If you’re too busy to do it yourself or just don’t know much about under the hood, no problem! Just head over to our site and schedule your service appointment now or stop in whenever works best for you!
- Make sure your battery is prepared for high temperatures:
Just like freezing winter temperatures, the summer heat can have a negative effect on your car’s battery. Actually, the Summer heat can be more damaging to your car’s battery than winter temperatures. Heat and vibration are a battery’s worst enemy, leading to internal breakdown and eventual failure. But let’s face it we’re not mother nature we can’t control the heat outside, but we can control the vibration. By making sure your battery is properly mounted, you can help minimize any vibration. Another potential problem is corrosion build up from evaporated battery fluid. A way to help combat this is to frequently clean any corrosive buildup from the battery. If a battery is more than three years old, it’s a good idea to have it tested by a trained technician to determine how much longer it will last.
- Keep your engine cool:
Cooling systems help keep the engine cool and should be flushed out periodically. Between flushes be sure that the coolant is filled to the proper levels by checking the overflow reservoir. If needed, fill the reservoir with 50/50 of water and the coolant recommended by the manufacturer. REALLY IMPORTANT! Never remove the radiator cap when the engine is still hot!! If this is the case, there is boiling coolant underneath and could cause serious burns!
- Keep your tires properly inflated:
Driving around on under-inflated tires in the summer heat can lead to a greater risk of the tires overheating leading to a blowout, which is extremely dangerous for you and your passengers. It’s always a good idea to check your tire pressure (including the spare) at least once a month because tires typically lose about one pound of pressure per month through normal seepage. The best time to get an accurate reading when the tires are cool, so try early in the morning or later at night for the best reading! Not sure the recommended inflation pressure? No big deal, your owner’s manual will give all the information need to know!
- Make sure fluids are at appropriate levels:
Most engine fluids lubricate and serve as a coolant by helping carry heat away from critical points. If these levels are low, the chances of these critical points getting hot are at a greater risk of overheating. Periodically check all vehicle fluids, including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid, to ensure they are at appropriate levels.
- Be prepared for summer breakdowns:
By having a well-stocked emergency kit which includes water, food, jumper cables, a flashlight with extra batteries, road flares, basic hand tools, and a first aid kit. And if you have AAA or roadside assistance make sure you have the proper numbers to call.
Summer is the season of having fun! You don’t want to derail that fun by breaking down or blowing out a tire on your road trip! Take the recommended steps to avoid having these issues, and be prepared in the case that it does happen.
