Whether you’re a new mommy or daddy or you’re a parent of serval kids, I think we can all agree that car seat safety should be a top priority when it comes to your child’s safety. But the truth is many of us are installing our car seats wrong and it is a major issue for our children’s safety. Even if some of us are properly installing children’s car seat we’re running into other issues like putting the child forward-facing too soon or changing from a car seat to a booster seat too soon. To avoid these dangerous habits, check out the helpful tips below and be sure to really ready your child’s car seat instruction manual. All car seats are a little bit different so making sure to keep the instruction booklet nearby is always a good idea!

Most Common Mistakes:

Loose Installation:

• Always read the manuals for the car seat, I know we all think we can figure things out without help but the truth is when it comes to safety you want to make sure you’re doing EVERYTHING correctly. Generally speaking there should be no more than 1” of movement at the belt path when you give it a firm shake.

The wrong recline angle:

• Getting the recline angle just right on a rear-facing seat can be tricky, but it’s crucial. Babies have big, heavy heads and weak neck muscles: If the seat is too upright, your babe might end up chin to chest, which can interfere with breathing. Plus being reclined also protects your baby’s spine in the case of a crash.

• More advanced seats now come with a built-in indicator that will tell you if you have installed it properly, but your seat doesn’t have that the rule is generally a 45-degree angle.

Loose or poorly positioned straps:

• If you are a parent you have probably experienced a wailing child saying that their straps are too tight, which then you might have pulled over loosed them and then got some peace and quiet. I’ll be the first to tell you not to do that. Yes, the screaming is annoying, and their seat belt probably isn’t too tight, You shouldn’t be able to grip the strap at all; if you can, it’s too loose.

• Make sure the chest clip is at armpit level—any lower means the clip isn’t doing what it’s designed to do

Moving to a forward-facing or booster seat too soon

• In each state, there are different requirements based upon height, weight, and age, but those are bare minimum requirements. As long as the child can comfortably remain seated rear-facing, they should remain that way because it is safer.

Using the wrong seat for your kid or your car

• Your manual will be able to provide you with information about the height and weight your child should be at in the car seat you have. Every baby has different body types but it is a good reference point to go off.

Using a second-hand car seat:

• Unless you know with 100% certainty that a seat has never been involved in even a minor fender-bender or that there are no missing or damaged parts, it’s best to avoid it. You might be saving a buck but it’s more important to save your child’s life.

Regardless of the season, keeping your fluid levels at their proper level is important in order to make sure your vehicle functions properly. Not many can name all of the fluid levels in our vehicles and what level they should be at. With that being said, I thought it would be a good idea to help inform you this week on what you need to get an eye on and where they should be. Topping off your fluid levels is a simple enough task to do at home, but if you feel safer having a professional do it for you we would be more than happy to do so for you. Just schedule a service appointment or stop in whenever is easiest for you!

Vehicle Fluids:

• Oil
  1. Your oil cools your engine, lubricates moving parts, and keeps the moving parts clean.
  2. You should change it regularly based on dealer recommendation and check it monthly!
• Coolant
  1. Coolant regulates your vehicle’s temperature.
  2. It is located in a reservoir near the radiator.
  3. If the level is low (level is indicated on the reservoir) take the vehicle to the shop to get your coolant topped up.
• Power Steering Fluid
  1. This helps you steer the vehicle.
  2. It’s located in a reservoir at the base of your windshield.
  3. Do the same as above, if the level is low take your vehicle to the shop to get the fluid topped up.
• Brake Fluid
  1. Brake fluid helps braking mechanisms work properly.
  2. If the level is chronically low, your brakes could be wearing out.
• Windshield Washer Fluid
  1. As you probably know, this helps clean your windshield of dust, debris, bug guts, etc.
  2. If you run out, get more at your local gas station and just refill the clearly labeled tank.

One of the easiest ways to keep your engine running smoothly is to make sure that your engine’s oil is clean. You should be checking your engines’ oil at least once a month, and if your oil needs to be changed often you could find yourself dishing out tons of money to the professionals. If you are more of a DIY person, make sure to check your owner’s manual to make sure you use the proper oil for your vehicle. Using the wrong oil could damage your engine and potentially cost you thousands of dollars or a new vehicle all together!

Checking Oil: How To

• Open the hood. Prop it so it stays open.
• Locate the oil dipstick next to the engine. It should have a yellow handle and/or be labeled.
• Pull out the dipstick and wipe it on a clean cloth or paper towel.
• Dip the stick all the way back in.
• Pull it out again and look at the oil level. If it’s in the middle of the hatched/indicated area, you’re good. More is better, less is okay, but if you’re lower than the area you need to get your oil topped up and have your system checked for leaks.
• Look at the oil quality and color. If there are a lot of particles or if the oil looks sludgy, you need to get it changed as soon as possible.
• Put the dipstick back in.
• Close your hood.

• Inspect your vehicle on the daily. A simple glance over of your vehicle can help you prevent major breakdowns or other potential hazards when you’re on the road.
• Learn the difference of your warning lights and what they mean. Check your owner’s manual for the answers!
• Check tire tread and depth, rotate them as needed. This will make winter travels safer and you’ll get better gas mileage.
• Keep track of ALL fluid levels and fill them as needed.
• Got filters? Replace them or clean them out – no one likes a dirty filter!
• Try detailing your ride but be sure to use superior supplies. Best supplies = better results.
• Have your battery tested by a professional. Check connections, terminals, and show them some TLC by riding them of any corrosion that’s present.

• Proper octane rating = better gas mileage. Stick to the octane level that is recommended by your car manufacturer.
• Replace those spark plugs. If your vehicle has a difficult time starting, especially in chilly temperatures, try replacing spark plugs.

• Broken frame: detachment from frame arms
• Metal corrosion: specifically at joints and claws
• Cracks, tears, or missing pieces in the rubber
• Check squeegee’s wiping edge, if it is rounded the wiper blade will be unable to make strong contact with the windshield

• Wiper blades should be checked at least every six months and changed out once a year. Weather conditions play a vital role in the life of your wiper blades and can sometimes cause them to deteriorate at a quickened pace.
• Check over both the squeegee and the metal frames to avoid common problems like streaking, skipping, splitting, and clattering. By doing this you will avoid reduced visibility when weather strikes.

• Gently wipe off any dirt or oil with a damp towel that has built up on the rubber squeegee.
