Who’s that Pokemon? In fact, it’s not a Pokemon at all! This sweet ride is called Sedric (Self Driving Car), Volkswagen’s first fully autonomous concept vehicle. While Sedric isn’t a Pokemon, he does bare a striking resemblance to Bulbasaur, of the popular show and game Pokemon. With its familiar boxy build, wide set “eyes” and gentle edges, this concept vehicle is not like anything you’ll see out on the road today, but may well be something the future holds that will making travel both safer and more accessible to a wider range of people.

For more details, take a look at the article linked below. Keep checking back here for more information on this fun and creative vehicle as it is released!

When thinking of the Volkswagen Beetle, most don’t associate it with high levels of speed, like, for example, 205 mph. But the truth is, most people would be wrong. In the hands of the right people, on the right course, just about anything can be accomplished.

That’s why every year, a group of classic Volkswagen owners meets on the Bonneville Salt Flats (a 30,000 acre stretch of white salt at the Utah-Nevada border) to hit, and exceed previous year’s speed records.

Barry “Burly” Burlile runs the 36 HP VW Challenge at the salt flats and calls it “amateur racing at its purest”. The event allows those that are truly devoted to being “gearheads” to show off their talents, converse with others, learn a few new tricks, and have some fun along the way.

It is expected that the drivers have some prior racing experience, but no one has ever been turned down because of age, which is different than a lot of other motor sports. “We’ve never turned anyone away who wanted to race. It’s the people that make this place so special,” says Burlile. He goes on to explain one of his most fond memories at the flats, or his friend Jan Atkinson, that learned to race at 73 years old.

The rules are simple. First, your vehicle must have either a VW body or engine. Second, the modifications done but pass USFRA’s safety and tech inspection. Third, go full throttle. You can pick between a one, three, or five-mile course to achieve the land speed record in your Volkswagen’s class. Finally, repeat step three to validate your speed.

So what do you think, do you have what it takes to race at the Bonneville Salt Flats?

Hamilton County, Tennessee middle and high schools can now apply for funds to create a science lab in their school thanks to the establishment of a $1 million program from Volkswagen Chattanooga and the State of Tennessee.

The program will allow students to gain access to emergent technologies, including 3D printers, robotics, renewable energy kits, automated manufacturing equipment, programmable microcomputers, and other science-related activities at the Volkswagen eLabs.

“At Volkswagen Chattanooga, hands-on learning is a crucial part of our educational programs and we are very pleased to partner with the State of Tennessee to bring the opportunity for laboratory-based science exploration to engage the minds of students here in Hamilton County,” said Christian Koch, President and CEO of Volkswagen Chattanooga. “Volkswagen places the highest priority on education at all levels and we are proud to continue our support for education here in Tennessee,” Koch said.

The selection process will be competitive. Schools will be required to identify a team of teachers that is committed to investing a significant amount of time to develop the knowledge and skills to take advantage of the laboratory opportunity. Each school must also commit to raise a minimum of $5,000 annually in cash or contributed materials to ensure that the lab is continually refreshed and materials are replaced.

“Volkswagen has been an incredible partner to the State of Tennessee for almost ten years, and we are grateful for its decision to further invest in Tennessee by creating this new, innovative program that will benefit Hamilton County middle and high school students,” Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam said. “Our state continues to make education a top priority, and when Tennessee companies show their support in helping us make huge strides in education, that means a great deal for the future of our workforce and its success. We thank Volkswagen for its contribution to Hamilton County and continued commitment to Tennessee.”

Earlier this week, Volkswagen unveiled the I.D. Buzz concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. This zero-emissions concept bus is part of the new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) and will offer smart sustainability, automated driving, intuitive usability, and a connected community. Other features that VW plans on including with I.D. Buzz are:

  • All-electric driving range of up to 270 miles
  • Augmented reality head-up display
  • Fully autonomous driving capability
  • Flexibility to allow seating for up to eight and two luggage compartments
  • Electric all-wheel drive with two motors and 369 horsepower
  • “I.D. Pilot” driving mode
  • Touch-sensitive steering wheel
  • Flexible center console with tablet display and Beats® Bluetooth® loudspeakers can be used outside the vehicle

“The Volkswagen brand’s big electric offensive begins in the year 2020 with a completely new vehicle architecture. That is when we will be launching an entirely new generation of fully connected, all-electric vehicles to the market. By 2025 we want to be selling one million of these vehicles annually. We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen.” said Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand.

The name “I.D. BUZZ” has a clever meaning behind it. The “I.D.” stands for “Identity,” “Idea,” “Individual,” “Intelligent” and “Iconic Design” while “BUZZ” is a phonetic wordplay on “bus” and refers to the silent “buzzing” of the drive system.
