The 2016 Volkswagen Passat has been presented with a Top Safety Pick + rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when it is equipped with the optional Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) system. The IIHS presents the Top Safety Pick award to vehicles that have earned a “good’ rating in each of the five crash tests that include head restraint, small overlap front, moderate overlap front, roof strength, and side tests. In order to add the + to the rating they must offer a front crash prevention system that earns an “advanced” or “superior” rating.

“The Passat’s IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award demonstrates Volkswagen’s longstanding commitment to vehicle safety and the development of innovative technologies,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Features such as Active Blind Spot Monitor and perpendicular Park Assist are unique to the segment and not typically seen outside of the luxury market.”

Additional safety features available on the 2016 Passat depending on the trim level include Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), Rear Traffic Alert with braking, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), passive and active Blind Spot Monitor, active Lane Departure Warning system (Lane Assist).
