Earlier this week, Volkswagen unveiled the I.D. Buzz concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. This zero-emissions concept bus is part of the new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) and will offer smart sustainability, automated driving, intuitive usability, and a connected community. Other features that VW plans on including with I.D. Buzz are:
- All-electric driving range of up to 270 miles
- Augmented reality head-up display
- Fully autonomous driving capability
- Flexibility to allow seating for up to eight and two luggage compartments
- Electric all-wheel drive with two motors and 369 horsepower
- “I.D. Pilot” driving mode
- Touch-sensitive steering wheel
- Flexible center console with tablet display and Beats® Bluetooth® loudspeakers can be used outside the vehicle
“The Volkswagen brand’s big electric offensive begins in the year 2020 with a completely new vehicle architecture. That is when we will be launching an entirely new generation of fully connected, all-electric vehicles to the market. By 2025 we want to be selling one million of these vehicles annually. We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen.” said Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management for the Volkswagen brand.
The name “I.D. BUZZ” has a clever meaning behind it. The “I.D.” stands for “Identity,” “Idea,” “Individual,” “Intelligent” and “Iconic Design” while “BUZZ” is a phonetic wordplay on “bus” and refers to the silent “buzzing” of the drive system.
